I'm really excited to be opening up for Irene again. Not only is this their debut album release show, but it's in their hometown. This should be an amazing night. I don't know many people in Göteborg, so come say hi!

My remix of Irene's "Little Things (That Tear Us Apart)" is available for purchase here:

Labrador Records - physical
Klicktrack - digital
(you can stream the song on the Klicktrack site, albeit in 3 separate segments.)

Apologies for the touristy picture above but I felt that it sort of summed up my trip back to Chicago these past 2 weeks. As I rode the trains and buses, walked through crowds or stood in drinking establishments I couldn't help but feel, at least a little, like a tourist. I was staying with my amazing friend Amy who did more than needed to make Nilla and myself feel at home but the fact that I was only in town for a couple weeks and living out of suitcase made it obviously hard to feel like I used to in my prior life as a Chicagoan. I found myself forgetting where some of the major streets intersected with others and on an occasion stood dumbfounded at the CTA booth as I fumbled to slide my card into the machine the right way. I never was one for the public transportation system there (too crowded and it makes me nervous), but nonetheless I was sent back a few rungs on the ladder of having a complete understanding of the city as I once had.

I saw others that reminded me of who I was when I lived there. It often felt like I was looking directly at myself just a year ago. Kids with messy hair zoomed by on fixed gear bikes, smoke billowed out of lungs and old friends piled in and out of bars. Cars parallel parked with ease but most commonly stood in traffic behind red lights or orange construction signs. I flinched at the noise of the trains and traffic the same way I flinched the first time I played guitar with a drummer back in junior high... crash, boom, isk, smash. Everything was exciting and scarey; I felt like I'd get mugged this time. My city wits weren't as sharp as they needed to be. I kept Nilla's wallet in my front pocket, sure that the bright red purse she was carrying around would get snatched.

We came back with all of our things, and quite a bit more. No one fucked with us. Everyone that I wanted to see came to meet me and with open arms welcomed me back, didn't want to let go, asked when I'd come back without a plan to leave again. I came back to Chicago with a clean head full of new experiences and ideas, worldly. The sun reflected off of me and the rain beaded up, fresh coat of wax. People looked at me with cameras and then flashed, gone the next second.

Broken voice

Thursday, September 14, 2006

Sorry all, I had to cancel my set tonight at South Union Arts. My voice is shot. I feel fine, it's just that I can't come close to singing. I haven't treated my vocal chords so kindly as of late and bouncing around the city under a steady day-long rain yesterday didn't help me out much either. Thanks to those who would've come though!

Digital tape

As promised, here's a couple video clips from last week's show at Empty Bottle. A huge thanks goes out to John Weaver Productions for taping the show, technically tweaking, and putting the clips up on youtube.com.

Yes

Thursday, September 07, 2006

For real, thank you Chicago for last night. It was honestly an incredible night and I felt so welcomed back. I got to talk with old, true and real friends that I'd been going through serious withdrawl from. Everything felt really right.

I will be posting video from the show within the next week. Thank you John Weaver for your technical abilities.

If you're interested in seeing me prance around and sing karaoke to my own songs one more time you can catch me next week: Thursday, September 14 at South Union Arts, Chicago, Illinois.

We're meeting for the first time again

Tuesday, September 05, 2006

The scenery during the drive from O'Hare airport to new parents' house in New Lenox left everything to be desired. The cheap furniture stores, the car dealerships, the family-style restuarants, I was home again. Language blows into my ears and immediately clicks. Signs make sense. I remember all of the roads' names. I'd rather not drive here; it looks incredibly dangerous.

In the basement there's my boxes, the ones I packed up but couldn't take with me. I opened one up and saw a tambourine, drum machine and my Tascam 4-track. I opened another and it was Levi jeans, a shirt that says "Nashville" and GoldToe socks. My record collection sits unplayed but ready to be. I eat 5 Ego waffles for breakfast and drink hot coffee with creamer, the kind I like from the orange and white plastic bottle. At Jewel we buy Breyers ice cream 2 for 1, haircare products and Carmex all for what seems to be just pennies. I look at the 4 dollars in my wallet and the bills are so skinny, all of the same color and crisp. I'll spend them (have to get some more between now and then) on a train ticket to my favorite city in the world, Chicago, tomorrow. I hope I see a lot of you there.

Kommer du?

Tomorrow, Pop Dakar. This is a wonderful free festival in Stockholm sponsored by Stockholm's University. Plenty of fine musics are to be had. I'll be doing various DJ sets throughout the day and night along with my fellow Svenskamusikklubben comrade Gustav Sundh and Indierave's Terry Erikson and Teet Siroskin.
