I've been meaning to break this out to all of my American friends for a while now but was just reminded of it just now. Here's your Swedish lesson for the day (year).
Here in Sweden, quite a few words are borrowed from the English language. I'm glad for this as it makes my life here in spoken form just a bit easier at times. Well, one word that wasn't borrowed was "walkman." These wonderful and portable devices existed here just as much as they did anywhere else in the world but the Swedes borrowed a completely different English word to describe it...
Swedish entry word
freestyle [²fr'i:staj:l] freestylen freestylar noun
kassettbandspelare i fickformat med hörlurar (English)
English translation
Walkman, portable cassette player
That's right. In Swedish a Walkman is called a freestyle. I think that's pretty wonderful.
Bringing it all back home to the year 2007, go download a few episodes of Beats in Space and throw it on your iPod. In the event that you did feel like freestyling your way around the city with some music in your ears this would be the perfect soundtrack.
