Lars Lagerbäck (Swedish coach) contemplates tonight's line up.
Photo and cartoon bubbling courtesty of Dagens Nyheter

To the casual football fan, Sweden vs. Latvia doesn't sound all that appealing. I have a feeling tonight's game is regional specific. I am aware that this isn't Brazil vs. Italy here.

However, the Euro 2008 qualifying ends tonight. And for a dude like me, this game is pretty important. See, if Sweden wins or draws against Latvia, they will advance into the tournament next summer. If they lose and Northern Ireland beats Spain then Sweden is outsky. That would mean: no Swedish football next summer. A summer in Sweden without the national team in the major tournament is bad. There's no amount of sun-dripped with Carlsberg in hand afternoons that could make up for it. So yeah, we need to at least TIE LATVIA tonight.

Where's Latvia anyways you ask. Get a map.

Wait, George Costanza tried to convert to Latvian Orthodox. There's your background research.

****Update / Spoiler****

Don't worry childrens, Sweden won 2-1 and will advance to the Euro 2008 tournament next summer. Carry on.

hey...sweden vs. latvia is a HUGE game, especially if you're latvian (like my boyfriend)! i'm lithuanian myself, so it's quite exciting if baltic national team games are ever televised in the US. i think lithuania ended up finishing third to last in their group, but my home country's interest lies more in basketball than football.as for george costanza converting to 'latvian orthodox'....well, looks like larry david took some comedic liberty there, as latvians are pretty much boring ol' lutherans, like the swedes. meanwhile, lithuania lost their forest-y pagan roots to the polish catholic influence. boo!

Latvia played a solid game, no doubt. Made me sweat a little bit when they tied the game in the first half.

I had a feeling that "Latvian Orthodox" didn't necessarily mean that it was the religious choice of the country currently. I stand corrected. It IS a funny episode though....
